Coral Planting Initiative in Meedhoo, Addu

A coral planting event was recently held on the island of Meedhoo in Addu, organized by the local NGO Nalafehi Meedhoo with support from the Bank of Maldives. The initiative aims to establish the Nalafehi Meedhoo Coral Garden, a project designed to enhance marine biodiversity and promote sustainable ecotourism in the region.

Approximately 20 students from Seenu Atoll School, along with members of local institutions and the public, took part in this meaningful event. The coral planting program offered participants a hands-on opportunity to engage in vital conservation efforts. They learned about the importance of coral reefs, the threats they face, and the techniques used to transplant and nurture coral fragments on custom-designed structures. This immersive experience contributed to the restoration of damaged reefs and supported local biodiversity.

Mohamed Kamil (Gaary), a founding member of Nalafehi Meedhoo, expressed the significance of the project: “Addu is a small atoll, and our reefs, particularly near Meedhoo, are limited. Our marine ecosystem is fragile, and it requires significant effort to ensure its sustainability. We hope to raise awareness among the younger generation, encouraging them to participate in conservation activities and gain practical experience. The coral reef we are creating today will become a vibrant home for marine life and a spot for visitors to enjoy snorkeling. I would love to see more projects like this, with greater involvement and support from people across Addu. Our thanks go to our partners—Southern Maldives Divers, Seenu Atoll School, Hulhumeedhoo Police, Hulhumeedhoo Health Centre, Meedhoo Avashu Office, as well as individuals like Hussain Mufeedh, Hadhee Abdull Shakir, Ali Nooradheen, Ali Di Di, Ahmed Riyaaz, Axeen Mohamed Ali, Ahmed Mirsadh, and all the community members who made this event a success.”

This project represents a crucial step in safeguarding the fragile marine ecosystems of Addu and highlights the strength of community-driven conservation efforts. As a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Addu’s commitment to protecting its natural environment is further reinforced by initiatives like this one, which play a vital role in preserving its biodiversity for future generations.
